State Pension Decoded

The UK State Pension, explained in plain English

Pension Credit: a pointer, not the full guide

Pension Credit is a separate, means-tested benefit that tops up low pensioner incomes — and it is claimed by far fewer people than are eligible. This is a pointer guide only: the deep guide, with rates, the savings rule, and how to claim, lives on our companion site.

What Pension Credit is — and is not

Pension Credit is not part of the State Pension. The State Pension is based on your National Insurance record; Pension Credit is based on your current income and savings. It tops up a low weekly income to a guaranteed minimum, and it can also add extra amounts for disability, caring responsibilities, and housing costs. It is paid separately, claimed separately, and assessed separately — which is exactly why so many people who receive the State Pension never realise they could also receive Pension Credit.

Why it matters beyond the money

Even a small Pension Credit award acts as a gateway to other help: Council Tax Reduction, a free TV licence from age 75, help with NHS dental and optical costs, Cold Weather Payments, and the Warm Home Discount, among others. That gateway effect is why advisers say to check eligibility even if you think the amount would be small — the award itself can unlock more than the weekly payment. Government estimates have repeatedly found that a large share of eligible households do not claim, leaving billions unclaimed each year.

Where the full guide lives

Because Pension Credit has its own rates, savings rules, and claim process, it has its own site in this network rather than a chapter here. For the full guide — rates, how savings are treated, the gateway benefits in detail, and how to apply — see Pension Credit Decoded, and the official GOV.UK Pension Credit pages linked below. Two cautions from that guide apply here too: Pension Credit is not payable if you move abroad permanently, and extra State Pension from voluntary contributions or deferring can reduce a Pension Credit award — so check the interaction before buying years or delaying a claim.

Frequently asked questions

I get the full State Pension. Can I still get Pension Credit?

Possibly, if your total income is still low — for example if you have no private pension and high housing costs. Pension Credit looks at income and savings, not just the State Pension, so check rather than assuming.

Is Pension Credit automatic?

No. Like the State Pension, it must be claimed. That is the main reason so much of it goes unclaimed.

Does Pension Credit affect my State Pension?

No — it is paid on top. But the reverse can matter: a higher State Pension can reduce a Pension Credit award, which is worth knowing before you buy voluntary years or defer.
